I've been working on a batch of songs for about two years now. This is the newest in that collection of songs, but I'm really happy with this early version of it. It may get cleaned up a bit for the album, but I wanted to remember this mix of it too. Also, I'm trying to document what I used in each song, so here's the recipe of this one so far:

Casio MT-540 (Pictured) - Drums/Percussion
Sampled Digital Percussion
Microkorg - Bassline
Microkorg 2 - arpeggio/squelches

Two Beeps (Unmastered Rough) by TellTheTell

Download via MediaFire

Alone Again (Naturally)

A cover I recorded around 2005 or 2006. in the summer of 2009, I toyed with the idea of covering another album in its entirety. I started work on a bunch of songs from Weezer's debut in June and worked on it through September-ish, but scrapped the whole project. This song was the only one I really liked, but I just couldn't get the vocals right until my try tonight. Enjoy!

Also, I'm going to transition the whole blog archive over to SoundCloud as it's a lot better than DivShare.

      No One Else by TellTheTell

Download via MediaFire

My Favorite Records of 2010

25. Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky (Young God)

I'm still trying to grapple with the fact that Michael Gira is calling this a Swans album rather than just another Angels of Light one, but the name of the band really doesn't matter. I still am a bit upset since back when I first got into Swans, they had just "died." Soundtracks for the Blind claims in its own liner notes that it's the last Swans album. The live album Swans Are Dead is self-explanatory. That much said, this return is a welcome one. The music on this release blurs the line of Swans' penchant for drones/repetition/creepy kid voices and Angels of Light's fractured americana. The songs are given room to breathe, yet the album itself is the shortest Gira's released in years. It's no Soundtracks, but it's a great balance. If this reunion continues, I'm really hoping for the 17 minute epics, tape loop soundscapes, and found sound that this release is clearly missing. In the meantime, I'll keep listening to this.

9. Xiu Xiu - Dear God, I Hate Myself (Kill Rock Stars, 2010)

In 2004, Xiu Xiu released Fabulous Muscles, the rare kind of record that shows a difficult band making accessible work without compromising their vision. Then they crawled back to "for fans only" territory for a full three albums and countless other releases. I've loved every one of them, but I don't think I'd pick much from La Foret, The Air Force, or Women As Lovers to try to convert someone to Xiu Xiu fandom. Well, Jamie Stewart and company have finally made another album I could play for the uninitiated. Both the title track and "Chocolate Makes You Happy" are phenomenal twisted pop songs in the tradition of Fabulous Muscles, great songs to play for someone who grew up on goth but maybe needs a bit more puking in their music. The rest of the record holds up as well. Stewart is finally figuring out how to record his extremely dynamic voice in a manner that mixes well with all of his electronics and weird percussion, which may have been half the battle in making his music accessible again.

8. Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma/Pattern + Grid World (Warp)

I was really worried about Warp records for a while... actually, I still am. I mean, Born Ruffians?!?!?! C'mon! Sure, Clark keeps putting out great records on the label, but he's been on the label since 2001, just barely out of contention for being considered "old guard," plus his music is very obviously catering to old farts like me who grew up on Warp's 90's output. Flying Lotus is the kind of artist Warp needs more of. There's just enough of the old Warp influence ("Kill Your Coworkers" off Pattern + Grid World) mixed with a demented take on MPC hip-hop sampling (nearly half of the tracks on Cosmogramma) plus something just new and weird that I can't quite put my finger on. Steven Ellison has a penchant for doing things in his songs I'd never be able to do, like putting snare drums slightly off-time, making the beat stutter a bit. Little touches like this make these two records disorienting and exciting. People have used a lot more than weird electronic records to achieve being disoriented and/or excited.

7. Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me (Drag City)

I'm still not done with the three step process of appreciating this record. My first couple of listens were just like every other record, just taking it in on a superficial label, appreciating that it sounds pleasant. It's a great Sunday morning sort of record. I spent much of my post-third listens taking in the interplay of the vocals with the instruments, appreciating the production value, and paying attention to song structure. Finally, I've been trying to do exactly what Pulp always told me not to do with their records: listening whilst reading along with the lyrics. What the heck are these songs about? I still don't know. Maybe I'll find out before her next album comes out.

6. Autechre - Move of Ten/Oversteps (Warp)

Autechre never stopped making great music, but perhaps their albums have suffered in recent years. In particular, 2008's Quaristice was a bit hard to listen to all at once, simply because it alternated between ambient and beat-oriented tracks. The two albums from this year don't simply divide the calmer and upbeat tracks into two albums. Instead, they take tracks that seem to be culled from the same palette (or at least similar Max/MSP pateches) and group them with like-minded tracks. I like to think of Oversteps as the home hi-fi record. It's the one I sat down and played online scrabble to with Cari walking by calling it 'robot stuff.' I prefer Move of Ten, because it's the "car" album. I can't remember the last Autechre record I listened to in the car so much. Also, it will also always be the record I listened to while following Ray Scott around on his birthday as we drove around the east side like high school kids. Strange that even lifeless robot stuff can be sentimental.

5. Beach House - Teen Dream (Sub Pop)

Sometimes bands release a great debut album and then make an ill-advised drastic change in their sound. Other times, a band will wallow in obscurity for several albums before changing something drastic that makes all the difference. Other bands never change their sound, even though they should. Beach House hasn't taken any of these paths. This is their third album. It really doesn't sound much different than the first two, but the band is clearly perfecting their craft. They take some of my favorite influences (namely 80's 4AD records), update it, and somehow tone it down. Their subdued approach makes for a record that is hard to get super excited about, but always evokes a "holy crap that was good" every time it ends.

4. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest (4AD)

When the first Atlas Sound record came out in early 2008, I didn't really understand the need for a solo project for the frontman of a band that also seemed like a solo project. Seeing Deerhunter live the first time at the 2008 Pitchfork Music Festival was a terrible experience. The band seemed like bad placeholders for something that was clearly created in and for a studio. The whole difference between Bradford Cox's two projects has really cleared up since then. Atlas Sound's sophomore effort was much more of a solo record. Halcyon Digest is a record clearly made by a band. As a bonus, they've really learned some restraint and self-editing since Microcastle. The songs are more like songs, the lines are more memorable. And the live show. The. Live. Show.

3. Zola Jesus - Stridulum/Valusia (Sacred Bones

Truly great sad music isn't only slow and depressing, it's a got to be a full production. How can music be dramatic without drama? That's why it's so fitting that Zola Jesus' masterpiece album is ten tracks spread across two releases. It cost more money than a single release. There was a gap of seven months between them filled with nothing but anticipation. The whole experience is somewhat reminiscent of what it must have been like to be a fan of The Smiths, The Cure, or Siouxsie and the Banshees the first time around. Buying singles, then re-buying them once they were compiled on something else, then repeating. Going out of your way to scour around for releases is easy when the songs are this good. And like all the great "sad" music, it's really not all that sad. Most of the songs on these releases deal with the aftermath of something terrible... characters struggling to make things right, or at least better.

2. The Radio Dept. - Clinging To A Scheme (Labrador)

It's really tough to listen to a new album by a band that has already released albums you hold in such high esteem. A popular example of this phenomenon is the case of "The Public vs. post-Sinister Belle & Sebastian." Pet Grief was my favorite record of 2006, Lesser Matters would have ranked high in 2003 if I had heard it before making my list for that year. This record was supposed to come out two years ago. Suffice to say the anticipation was super high for this record. The first time I listened to it, I felt unsurprisingly underwhelmed. But then I played it again and again. I just kept putting it on for months until I realized it was A FUCKING RADIO DEPT. ALBUM OF COURSE IT'S GREAT. They changed just enough since the last album, adding a little bit of late 80's synth jabs, a little dub, and even some 90's throwback spoken samples. I still listen to this all the time... a total car album, and easy contender for this number 2 slot.

1. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today (4AD)

I didn't really know what to expect out of a new Ariel Pink record in 2010. He hadn't released an album since 2006, and even all the stuff he released between '04 and '06 was already a couple years old when it was released. I don't think I have ever heard a song recorded by Ariel Pink recorded between 2003 and whenever this new one was recorded. I think most anyone would have been able to tell me the 4AD debut would be a bit of a jump fidelity-wise, and surprise... it is produced a bit better. But honestly, it's not the big jump the critics make it out to be. The real difference between this and the old Ariel Pink is that the songs are a LOT better, and I loved old Ariel Pink . Now that I can decipher the vocals more effectively, I understand them a lot less... I'm a big fan of how weird the lyrics are (Case in point: "Menopause Man"). On the subject of individual songs, how about "Round And Round"??!?!?! What a single! It's like the best talk show theme and the best 80's blue-eyed-soul slow motion jam met on an old VHS tape. This record is what independent rock was in 2010.

My Humps (Measels Humps Rubella)

One from the archives, a remix I did back in 2005. For reasons out of my control, I haven't had access to my normal recording space, so I asked friends two weeks ago who wanted to have a mixtape made for them. The response was a bit overwhelming, so I ended up making three mixtapes, each with one to four people in mind when choosing the tracks and sequence. This is the first of those three tapes, made for and given to my wife, Cari. The mix was sourced from compact discs and vinyl (no mp3/downloaded source material was used) and mixed live. There is only one copy in circulation, pictured above. The digital version (downloadable below) is a rip of the actual mix from the cassette, tape his and all. The tracklisting is as follows:

A01 - Starlet - Pin-Up
A02 - Velocity Girl - Forgotten Favorite
A03 - The Cannanes - Miserable
A04 - Lois - Strumpet
A05 - The Crabs - Swallow The Sea
A06 - Heavenly - Sperm Meets Egg, So What?
A07 - My Favorite - 1986
A08 - The Radio Dept. - 1995
A09 - Tiger Trap - Supercrush
A10 - The Busy Signals - Headphoneworld
A11 - Volume All*Star - Couples Skate Only
A12 - Beat Happening - Fourteen
A13 - Sleater-Kinney - Surf Song
A14 - Land Of The Loops - I Confess
A15 - The Lemon Pipers - Rice Is Nice
A16 - The Free Design - Bubbles
A17 - The Go-Go's - Head Over Heels
A18 - The Microphones - Oh Anna
B01 - Windy & Carl - Beyond Asleep
B02 - Mu-Ziq - Ethereal Murmurings
B03 - Trouble Books - Talons
B04 - Lackluster - Thor's Magic Bathtub
B05 - Fripp & Eno - Wind On Wind
B06 - Ramses III - Honey Rose 5
B07 - Cocteau Twins - Plain Tiger
B08 - Keith Fullerton Whitman - Track3a (2waynice)
B09 - David Bowie - Subterraineans

Download

Episode 11 - Goodbye Prado?

A big question mark on this one, as it is possibly the last podcast recorded in a rented house.

This month's piece is an ode to two things: drums and procrastination. It's my third try at doing a piece for this month, the last two were abandoned due to frustration that they weren't as good as the previous two months' pieces. So I began this at 7 P.M. on November 30, and posted it at 11:30. The components of this piece are:

Three drum takes (multitracked onto 8 different tracks)
Three glockenspiels
One guiro
Two shakers
One triangle

All of the instruments were played live without any programmed percussion, although one of the glockenspiel tracks is heavily processed. The juvenile, yet sentimental work was a soundtrack for the carefree time and made for great pop radio fodder. It's odd to think that such a light bunch of songs could have struck such a chord with a generation, but it did. In honor of the anniversary of the release of this album, Cleveland electronic artist Les Cousins Dangereux has covered the album in its entirety.

Les Cousins Dangereux is Tim from the band The Muttering Retreats. Hearing about the 10th anniversary of Blink-182's album, he listened to it at the beginning of June 2009. The album is oddly close to him, due to an old coworker who played the album constantly at the record store where they both used to work upon the album's release. Hearing an album so often only forced Tim to actually enjoy it, which was quite the task, considering he didn't enjoy pop-punk, let alone the band that defined pop-punk in the late 90's. But after realizing the album was ten years old and it had made such an impact, Tim recorded one of the songs as an homage. It was so fun, he decided to do the rest of the album, but to not let it take longer than a week. So, since started the first song on June 6, the album needed to be finished, mixed, mastered and posted online by June 13. It was.

Ten years after the release of the original album, it's obvious that Blink-182 utilized the sentimental aspects of 80's pop music and infused it with a signature 90's brand of pop punk and humor. Likewise, Les Cousins Dangereux utilized the sounds of 90's video game music with the capabilities of 00's computer editing. When coupled with the classic songs from Blink-182's album, this homage acts as a tribute not only to a great pop album, but to the whole 1990's.

1.
